Words can sometimes be so hurtful, especially when they are untrue and said about you. Events from this week are behind this short poem, unfinished and unpolished, but from my heart.
words
deflating my spirit
like a balloon
with a small leak
echoing
why
words
will not hold me hostage
from happiness
from being who I am
I will move on
to become a better, stronger person
because
of
words
deflating my spirit
like a balloon
with a small leak
echoing
why
words
will not hold me hostage
from happiness
from being who I am
I will move on
to become a better, stronger person
because
of
words
I have been thinking about that old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me." and I wonder who said that. It isn't really true is it? There are words once said that can never be taken back. Your poem shows your brave heart seeking words to move beyond the hurt.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these words.
ReplyDeleteHave you heard this song about words?

Hurtful words have been on my mind lately, too. Thank you for your poem that captures the pain words can cause and reminds us that we still have power over them as well.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a Nursery Rhyme:
ReplyDeleteA wise old owl sat in an oak
The more he saw the less he spoke
The less he spoke the more he heard
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?
If only we would all think before we speak.
Talk to each other, not about? Hmmm, such a novel thought! I'm glad you will not let words defeat you. Your words have defeated the others.
ReplyDeleteI love how you began with hurt and deflation and ended with strength and hope.
ReplyDeleteThere is a definite resilience in your poem: "words will not hold me hostage." Stay strong! You know the truth!
ReplyDeletethis is awesome--not your circumstances, but your attitude, the sign, etc. As hard as it is to be the bigger person, to try and get past the words, it sounds like that is exactly what you are working towards. Stay strong!
ReplyDeleteGood for you for staying true to who you are, Leigh Anne. I see that others have good learning words for you, & I know that I love the words that say something about no one else defining who you are, & I hear that in your poem. We're all here listening and sending support!
ReplyDeleteWhat would the world be like if we all took the time to talk to each other, really talk to each other. Look into my soul when you speak to me. I am so sorry this happened to you, but you are right to understand that you will be stronger for it. Hang in there! We got your back!
