SOLC #22 The Plumber

The Slice of Life March Challenge is hosted by Two Writing Teachers.

My husband was a banker for 30 years.  He is not a plumber.  For the sake of my marriage, I should probably just stop right here, but I wouldn't have much of a slice.

We have had a s-l-o-w leak from our tub for quite awhile.  It drips down in the basement, but because it dripped a minimal amount water, we just left it alone.

Today I noticed that it had become much worse.  I hesitantly mentioned it to my husband.  Remember, he is not a plumber.  He attempts to do small plumbing jobs which many times turns into a big ordeal.  When he attempts these, the kids and I cringe, shut our eyes, hold our breath, and sometimes we even run.

Being a smart person, I left to go to school for awhile and left him to play plumber.  I came home to this:

everything out of the closet and strewn in all corners of the bathroom,

a rather large hole in the drywall,

and an empty spot where the shower head used to be.

All is well though.  We have a shower with a crooked shower head that works and no leak.  And now he is off to tackle the upstairs bathroom.

Maybe he could be a plumber?

  1. Yikes! I'm laughing my way through this! I have experienced many of these times with my dad and my boys! Much cheaper to wait until they are gone and call the real deal!

    1. I so agree, but my husband is not one to let a job sit. We are total opposites!

  3. So funny! I know this story but I am usually the person messing with the leaks - then I call the plumber.

  6. Oh dear. And on a Sunday, if your need a professional it will be pricey!

  8. I am so glad everything turned out "well". Well told - I laughed out loud when you spoke of "a rather large hole in the dry wall". Here's to retirement and time to perfect new skills. Thanks for sharing.

  9. This made me laugh. The picture with him peeking out of the door is priceless. We have a minor plumbing problem in the kitchen...and I dread the day my husband decides to 'fix' it. He is a retired computer programmer....not a plumber. He mentioned a couple of days ago that if he just had a few books to hold the pipe in place he just might be able to connect it right. Oh my...maybe I need to call your husband to help?....or maybe a plumber. Loved this post. Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/

  10. Loved the post and empathize with those "simple" problems that create such messes--especially when someone well-intentioned but perhaps not so well-skilled is involved! Your introductory few lines hooked me right away. I agree that the photo of your husband peeking around the door is priceless! You can always console yourself in the future with the thought that these projects make good writing material! Thanks for sharing!

  11. I am still chuckling! At least that he has extra time now to work on these projects as he is retired. Good thing right?

  12. I have a great husband trying to be a plumber story. The funny thing is my husband tells it on himself. He says he will try anything, except plumbing and electrical. Then the story begins. Yeah, it was a flood. In the yard, thank goodness, and not inside. He learned a hard lesson.

  13. hehehe this is why I'm nervous to try to 'fix' anything around the house. I can handle a few things, but I kind of dread the day when something major happens that "should be fixable" by the "average guy."

  14. Husbands tackling jobs that they know nothing about make me worried. You were smart to leave the house. So is he now going to be a drywaller to fix that? Good luck with the shower in the morning.

  15. Yikes, I never like anything that begins and ends with a plumber, especially the year we had a cascade of water downstairs from the upstairs bathroom. Glad all seems well at your place!

  16. You made me remember my step-father who tried all sorts of things, & "sometimes" it worked. So funny, Leigh Anne. You wrote it beautifully-still laughing!

  17. Oh my!! Happy the leak is gone. Now for that hole!?

My parents just had this same exact scenario on Friday. Hole in the wall and everything. You could have written their story...so ironic.

On a lighter note, your mention of going into school means it is open on the weekend? We would LOVE that at our school. If I could have a few hours on a Saturay meaning I'd be so much farther ahead!

  18. Oh, this made me laugh! Love the beginning where you mention that the story should just stop there ... but you don't. I'm glad to hear that al is well except the crooked shower head. :)
