Two O'Clock Dinnertime #SOL21

Join Two Writing Teachers and other teacher-writers as we share a slice of life every single day in the month of March.

I love cooking. I have been cooking since I was a young girl. When I was growing up, my mom worked, and we had four kids in our family. To help her out, I would get dinner going before she got home. We eventually had a "rule" that whoever cooked, didn't have to do the dishes!

As I was raising my own children, so much revolved around mealtime. We were a routine family. Naptime, mealtime, bathtime were all on schedule. As a stay-at-home-mom, I had dinner on the table by 5:00 almost every night. (For that matter, I still do!) Dinner was, and still is, the main event in our house.

My son Ethan lives an hour away, and he comes home most weekends to do laundry and get a home-cooked meal. This weekend he wanted to eat and head back to his apartment earlier than usual.

This meant eating before 5:00. This meant I had to think about the timing. This meant that I had baked a cherry pie, made baked ziti for the take-back meal, and had steaks marinating before 11:00!

I don't know what I am going to at 5:00 when it will be "dinnertime"! And I thought the time change was bad enough today!

Happy Pi Day!

  1. Cherry pie!!! Yum! And steaks for dinner plus food to go! Sounds like a sandwich or popcorn or pizza kind of dinner to me!

  2. I really enjoyed your slice...I like how you went big first...thinking about what cooking has meant to you (and your family of origin) then to how the main meal was the core of your own family. I think many can relate. I never gave it too much thought, but this seems to ring true for me. Then you moved to your current situation, having to adjust your plans to accommodate your son's wishes. Nice that you were able, but I agree...did he have to pick today!?! It's already a day of adjustments! Obviously, just kidding. It's also a piece about the lovely tradition of your son's weekly visits!

  3. How nice that you son come back on weekends and you have a meal together each time. He is a very lucky kid. I hope that is the case for my son, when he gets older. And your cherry pie looks amazing.

  5. That is so nice that your son comes home on the weekends. I am sure it must feel a little crazy to be off your routine. I agree with everyone that the pie looks scrumptious!

  6. That cherry pie looks delicious. We had pecan pie in honor of SIL's birthday and Pi Day. We always had popcorn for dinner on Sunday nights since our big meal was Sunday dinner, usually around 2 or whenever the roast was finished cooking. I remember take-back meals from Mom's kitchen!
