Writing Reflection

As the year makes its way to the home stretch, I took some time to reflect on my writing habit. Or maybe I should say my lack of a writing habit.

I am almost to the end of a notebook, which has taken me much too long to fill. Running my fingers over the slight indentation of the ink on the pages, I reread some entries tonight. The poems, reflections, and memories came flooding back, and I realized how much I miss regular writing in my notebook. I have written a lot this year, but it has been more professional writing. But writing in a notebook is just...well it's just different.

I made a list of what kept me from writing this year. Three things bubbled up:  my phone, not creating a habit, and making excuses. These are three areas I intend to improve on in the coming year, and I know these will be the catalyst for my writing goals for 2024.

My next decision:  Do I abandon a notebook that has taken too long to fill, or do I plug away and finish it before starting a new one in 2024. This is hard for me, as I am one who likes "fresh beginnings."

What about you? Do you like new notebooks at the beginning of the year? Or are you a start-to-finish kind of notebooker?

Here's to writing in 2024! May my words return and find a home on the page.

  1. Leigh Anne, this is a very helpful slice. First of all, it reminds your reader of a few things to do as a writer. Re-reading what we have written in the past, setting goals and planning for any future writing.
To answer your question: I really like to start the year off in a 'fresh' notebook.

  2. I share your writing challenges in 2023...and 2022 as well....My notebook is 2.5 years old and not yet filled....I did buy a fancy new one from Staples and wondered if it was time to start fresh, but decided my real goal was to create some better writing habits and to put more control on the time I spend on NYTimes games such as Spelling Bee....a REAL time sucker!

  3. I confess. I have MANY notebooks. All are half or three-quarters finished because I always find new beautiful ones to begin. It's okay, Leigh Anne. Start a new one! Happy, joyous holidays!

  4. I love a new notebook more than fresh baked cookies! And having a writing life at all is a great goal! What has helped me in the transition from the notebook is a programmable blog. I can write ahead if I'm going to be busy. That helps a lot when life gets a little overwhelming.

  5. Dear Ms. Leigh Ann,

What a lovely - and inspiring post! I am also quite affectionately acquainted with journals - and I certainly understand your dilemma! I will say honestly that I've chosen both options in the past. Sometimes, I press on to finish (but most of the time, I start fresh [smile]).

I think it is quite laudable that you are so conscientious about your writing life, and I agree with my peer(s). Your attentiveness to your challenges and aspirations to improve are indicative of the depth of your passion.

I am encouraged by your endeavors and hope to write more - and more meaningfully - in the new year as well! Cheers in advance with regard to your many upcoming milestones. I'm rooting for you!
