I barely finished this on time, but I made it two weeks in a row!
The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes.
I couple of students in my Mock Newbery Club read this book, and both of them thought this was not Newbery bound. I think it surprised many readers because of the age of the main character and the possible reading audience. It is a tender story, and the ending was what won me over.
