Being part of a community benefits a writing life. When I first began blogging, it was the community of writers that kept me writing. I have met so many amazing people through the act of writing stories and sharing words.

I belong to a group of writers called Teach Write. Each month we have a writing challenge to exercise our writing muscles. Sometimes it is a new poetry form and other times it is just a topic that centers our writing. Once a month we gather online to write and share, similar to a poetry slam. This is my favorite part - to hear the writing read aloud.

This month we are writing a Fib poem, which is a poem written in syllable count according to the Fibonacci sequence:  1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8.

Last night we gathered, wrote, and shared, and today I offer you a bit of spring.

Magnolias

Just

one

blossom,

against a

cerulean sky,

heralding Miss Spring’s arrival.

Mourning Whistle

Today I share a Fibonacci poem which is based on a series of numbers where the next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it.  For example, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8...  Instead of using syllables, I decided to try the number words used in each line.

Tonight I am sitting on my porch listening to a train go through town; its whistle sounding like a cry of mourning.


A
train's
mourning whistle 
fills the air
from a far away distance,
sadly crying out to those willing to listen
as it slowly travels from town to town toward its endless journey west.

Poetry Challenge #8 - One

Today I found an unexpected comment on my very first post.  I am still processing the story and will write more about it on Tuesday for my Slice of Life.  But, I was so taken by this story that I needed to write...had to write.  Yesterday I tried a Fib poem, and that structure seemed to fit today also.

two new connections
inexplicably intertwined

moon

rises

a crescent

casting night shadows 

playing hide-and-seek with the clouds

as I sleepily wait for my dreams to say goodnight.
