Slice of Life - Milk Jug Calendar

Time has a way of slipping by, and the older I get, the faster it goes.  And NO I did not believe that when my grandparents would say those words when I was a child.

I have this quirky way of watching time go by...especially as it relates to school--reading the date on the milk jug.

We go through about three jugs of milk a week at our house and paying attention to the dates is just something that I do.  Those dates have a way of marching through time.  At the end of the school year, I can't wait until I finally see May, then June with the anticipation of summer break.

Last week I grabbed two jugs of milk and I couldn't believe my eyes...JULY8th!  I gasped, my heart started racing and I broke out into a cold sweat (well maybe I just gasped!)  It couldn't be!  I blinked to make sure I was reading it correctly.  Yes, it did say July.  I knew then that it was all down hill from there.  Summer was flying by and not even a jug of milk could stop it.

This week as I timidly approached the refrigerated section and opened the door, I opened one eye and then the other.  Oh no...July 18th!  I slammed the door shut and said, "No thanks, I think I'll try the OTHER store!"

  1. I know what you mean about time. Maybe a milk jug CAN stop summer from flying by if you know the right one to pick! Thanks for the chuckle. Welcome to SOLS see you just proved it, you are a writer!

  2. What a fun slice! I love that you measure time by milk jugs. I'll be looking at those dates a little differently now. Yet, I refuse to believe that summer is flying by. Especially since July is my own month of independence from school. The custodian in our building always laughs when I tell him I won't be in during July. He and I made a friendly wager this year and I do think I'll earn that bag of M&Ms. Welcome to our community - I love slices that make me laugh!

    1. Thank you Ramona. For some reason humor has a tendency to find its way into my writing. But I would never consider myself as someone who is funny. Maybe I will discover a new voice that I never knew I had!

  3. I love this slice as I too - used to - tell time by milk containers. I also tell time by the piles of laundry - but that is for another day! Welcome to the SOLers!

  5. Welcome to SOL! Your milk jug calendar made me chuckle. It sure seems like summer goes a lot faster as an adult than it did when I was a child. Back then, summer seemed endless! Now it seems like a long weekend.

  7. If only changing grocery stores could slow down the hands of time, sigh. Like the others have said, welcome to SOL Tuesday. I'm not sure what you meant by your question on your link. Send me an email and we can figure it out.

  8. Welcome to the Slice of Life group! I love your post and how time is marching on, even though we'd love it to slow down a bit. Every year summer goes more quickly than the last. I remember those long summers with endless days stretched out in front of me. Where did that time go? I'm go glad you're blogging. Keep it up!

  9. Wow - welcome to the Slice of Life community! We all start with the baby steps, but then you realize what you have gotten yourself into and you can't turn back. It's an amazing experience!

Love your blog - green + polka dots = fun! Your first "slice" was tasty. I will NEVER look at the milk jug dates the same again!

  11. Isn't it funny how we all mark time in our own quirky ways. I use annual events more than specific dates, but it all adds up to the same thing: time move too quickly!
Congratulations on your blog! The support and encouragement of the SOLC community is amazing.
