I believe being a writer is one of the biggest gifts you can give to your students. ~ Stacey Shubitz
This month I am participating in the Slice of Life Story Challenge. Thanks to Two Writing Teachers for creating a space for me to share my corner of the world.
Need an idea for a quick slice? Then look no further than your book shelf. Why not create a little spine poetry?
What is it? Spine poetry is created by using the titles of books - their spines.
How do I do it? I look through my shelves and find books that have similar ideas. I also look for verbs and phrases. After I pulled several out, I move them around until something resonates with me.
Here are a few of my latest creations. (I like All We Have is Now so much, it ended up being in two of them.)
Warning: this can become quite addicting!
hidden figures
lost in the sun
keeping safe the stars
paper wishes
dash
all we have is now
get happy
the world from up here
took
pieces of why
all we have is now
I love spine poetry. I think it's a huge brain challenge to find just the right titles to make the perfect poem. Loved looking at your creations today, Leigh Anne!
ReplyDeleteI love the poems you created! I will have to try this. Might be fun to try with my students as well. :)
ReplyDeleteIt IS addicting. Makes me want to head to the library right now. Your poems are so thoughtful and thought-filled. Love these!
ReplyDeleteI saw your tease and had to read this slice. Thanks for the inspiration. My favorite... hidden figures....
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten, Leigh Anne. This really messes up my bookshelves, but it is fun. You've found marvelous titles for your poems! I love "All We Have Is Now" too!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to make spine poetry and never have. Your post is just the push I need. Bookmarking this for later in the month! Your blog is so inspiring to me, Leigh Anne.
ReplyDeleteWell chosen titles. Thoughtfully arranged. Third one is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! You have inspired me to try spine poetry. As soon as I get home next week, I'm going to do it. I can already see it will be addictive. Your first one is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI love this. I've heard of spine poetry, but never tried it myself. I'm feeling inspired right now...to try it & share it with my little writers. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is such an inventive concept. I especially love your first poem for the images of the sun and stars. Love how that connects to the story of Hidden Figures as well! Brava!
ReplyDeleteI love your spine poetry! You are so right about it being addicting!
ReplyDeleteSo cool!
ReplyDeleteThis is so much harder than it looks. It was a mess when I tried it with kids. Every book was strewn around the classroom. I love your simple ones. Maybe I need to limit them to 3-5 books. Each of yours offers hope.
ReplyDeleteAlways a great challenge to create just the right message. I may have to get to my shelves and see if there are any new poems waiting to be found.
