Book Love

It is hard to believe another March has arrived, and it is time for another Slice of Life Challenge.  This is my third year of participating.  Thank you Two Writing Teachers for creating this space for me to share my corner of the world.

One of the things about teaching that brings me the most joy is connecting books with readers.  I also believe it is the most important part of my job.

Three weeks ago I started book clubs with my 105 6th graders.  While I was preparing for them, I had stacks of books in corners, on desks, and on the floor.  They were literally everywhere in my classroom.

One night as I was leaving school, I stopped and said goodnight to the night custodian.  He sheepishly lowered his head and said, "I hope you don't mind but I have been reading one of your books on my break at night.  I think it's called The Walk On."

"I don't mind at all, but darn, I gave out all those books to my students today."

"That's OK.  But it is really good."

I never would have imagined that my book love would reach our custodian.  Book clubs end next week, and I will make sure that book gets back into his hands.  No reader is left behind!

That same week I received a text message from a student athlete's mother.  They were on their way home from our boys' high school basketball game.  This student would much rather be playing sports than reading a book.

Her text:  "Last night on our way home from the game, I noticed the dome light was on.  I asked why without looking.  "Steven" exclaimed, 'I'm reading!'  And sure enough he was reading The Walk On."

My reply:  "I just want to cry right now!  THAT is what I want for all kids!"

One book in the hands of two readers, creating connections, creating book love.

Pure joy!

  1. I.Love.This. "No Reader Left Behind!" Naturally, I need to find this book. I'm in a Pre-K to 8 building this year, and I'm marveling at the ways that readers can impact each other when the environment is right. Clearly you have created this environment. Have a great day!

  3. Hmmmm, makes me wonder how many other school custodians have secretly enjoyed a good book or two in the quiet hours of the evening. Sounds like the theme for a new book!

  10. It is a joy to get the right book in right hands. We once had a school guard who was learning English and he liked asking for recommendations from third graders. Keep spreading the book love!

  11. "Pure joy!" Your words warm my heart. And it's why I had to find a way to keep sharing book love after I retired.
