We have our own Newton's Law at our house: "If you drop something, it will land in a crack."
Let me explain. When we built our house 34 years ago, I was pregnant with our first child. The builder promised we would be in by the time the baby was born. We were, but that also means some problems arose.
We have hard wood floors throughout our home, and I love them. They are rustic, wide plank made out of hickory wood. We wanted them laid side by side with cracks, not tongue and groove. Sadly, the wood was not completely dried out, and the cracks became wider.
It never fails, when we drop something, it invariably falls in a crack. When I clean my floors, I use a shop vac to "clean the cracks" because that is where the dirt, food, and dropped items land.
One time when our son lost a tooth, it fell in a crack. We searched and searched for that tooth so he could put it under his pillow for the tooth fairy. I am one of those weird moms who saved their children's teeth, so I secretly went and grabbed a tooth, placed it on the floor, and surprisingly "found it" just in time for bed.
Another time, I lost the diamond from my "not-quite-an-engagement-ring-that-could-be-another-slice". I was devastated because I had no idea where I lost it. A long time later, as I was cleaning the cracks, I spied something shiny in one of them. Yes, it was my diamond in a crack.
When I read Terje's slice about her analog bag, she mentioned dancing shoes. She didn't bring them because she thought we couldn't dance in my living room. Oh, with a ready-made dance floor, we could move the furniture back, turn on Glenda's records, and dance the night away!
But watch out Terje, your heel might just end up in a crack!
a space for me and other teacher-writers to share our stories.
At least we would know where to look for the heel! How fun to hear about your floor and the things that have been lost and found there over the years.
ReplyDeleteA life saving crack 😊
ReplyDeleteGrandson and I were on the screened-in porch today and almost lost a key to the crack. He reassured me that his dad would be able to retrieve it! Dads can do anything. Now I need to go find Terje's slice. So significant that you speak glibly of these slicer friends, Terje and Glenda. We'll have a grand time at the party!
