The Slice that Returned 19/31

The Slice that Returned Part I

I thought of a slice yesterday, but when it came time to write about it, I couldn't remember what it was. As a back-up, I just made a list of the things I did. As I looked over the list, I remembered I failed to include that I had two house keys made.

BINGO--that was my slice!

The Slice that Returned Part II

I bought a new car last fall. We typically keep our cars until they have died a slow, agonizingly expensive death, so I had my old one close to 17 years. My daughter learned to drive in it, and she is now 33. It was a Jeep Cherokee, and I loved it.

My new one is a 2026 Equinox, and I love this one, too. (I better because at this rate, it'll probably be the last one I buy!)

The key fob for my Jeep quit working a long time ago, so I had to manually lock and unlock my doors. It also had a key I put in the ignition to start it. When I came into the house, I placed my keys in a little basket by the front door. I did this for 17 years.

My Equinox is totally different, as those of you who buy new cars understand. I love being able to unlock and start my car with the press of a button and with my key being in my purse.

However, there are some days when I have good muscle memory days, and that new key goes in the basket when I walk into the house. The next time I need to leave, I grab my purse and school bag, and I am out the door.

And yes, I lock myself out. I've done it so many times, that I decided to make extra keys. Now, I have one on my school keys and one hidden in an easy hiding spot.

I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner, but no more locking myself out of the house!

Thank you to Two Writing Teachers for creating
a space for me and other teacher-writers to share our stories.

  2. Since I read your slice yesterday, I had to read today's. Locking yourself out is so frustrating. Fortunately our kids live on both sides of us and they both have sets of our keys and so far they've never both been gone when I needed a key. We had a Jeep Cherokee and loved it. We now have a Chevrolet Traverse and love it. It was fabulous last year when we took a 10-day road trip.

  3. I agree… love the button press… and it can cause a few issues. For a few months we had a second van key lost in the van.. and the battery was dying. So. You could get in the van, turn it on, drive away… and then it would say “battery low.” I was always worried I’d get somewhere and suddenly not be able to turn the van back on!

  4. I just got a new car a month ago, and its predecessor had old-fashioned keys. I'm so happy to be able to click to start! I feel like I'm in the lap of luxury.

  5. Yep! It only takes getting locked out once for us to become very resourceful! We don't have the 'start the car without a key', yet, but when that happens, I'm sure there will be a new 'memory' learning curve for me. :)
