SOLSC #21 - The Visitor

Read more slices at
Two Writing Teachers

My husband lost a friend, G-man, to cancer yesterday.  Cancer is such an ugly word. It slips into your life unexpectedly, turns it upside down, and takes away what is most precious to you.

Last fall, the visitor came.

          Yesterday, the visitor left.

The visitor stayed just five short months.

The Visitor

a knock
greets him
at the door of life

the visitor
enters and dwells
in an unwelcome place

the visitor
steals day by day
bit by bit
a part of his body
his life
his future

the visitor
walks away silently
moving on to the next door
leaving behind
many tears
saddened hearts

but no more pain

the visitor
closed this door of life
but the memories live on

These shoes were given to my son from
G-man.  Read the story behind the shoes here.

  1. I am so sorry for the loss of this man in your life. Your poem is poignant. Cancer does steal so much from life.

  2. This is a stunning piece of writing. Please accept my sympathies at this sad time.

  3. I am sorry for your loss. This unwelcome is indiscriminate. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

  4. Such a tribute for your exquisitely beautiful and sad poem. Prayers for all who are mourning the loss.

  5. I was captivated throughout your entire. It is beautiful written and tears came easily knowing that this ugly "visitor" has taken the lives of so many.

  6. I'm so sorry for your loss. Cancer is one of those sickening phenomenons that we will never be able to grasp and understand. "A visitor" is a great comparison to cancer. It comes, it goes, it returns, it stays, it leaves, it moves on. Beautiful poem.

  7. A visitor we all hope and pray never comes knocking. I'm sorry for your loss, what a beautiful tribute.

  8. Cancer is an unwelcome visitor. It is an excellent comparison. I just wish the visitor left and not your friend. How tragic.

  9. Sad. I am so sorry for your loss.

  10. What an powerful poem, Leigh Anne. I have lost both of my parents to cancer so it certainly hit home for me. Thank you for your words. I'm very sorry for your loss. "The G Man" has certainly left his mark on your son and your family. Thank you for sharing this.

  11. So sorry for your loss. Cancer comes as a visitor who steals. Your poem is powerful.

  12. Cancer is such an ugly visitor. I am so sorry for your family's loss. What a tragedy. Your poem is powerful and beautiful. I hope it helps soothe the pain.

  13. I have tears in my eyes! I am so sorry!! The "G-Man" sounds like an amazing man. Losing a friend always hurts so much. The poem you wrote really touched me. Thank you for sharing this. Praying for you and your family and of course "G-Man"!

  14. Such a hard time! You and your family, and this man's family are in my prayers!
