SOLSC #6 - A Missing Part

Read more slices at
Two Writing Teachers
Tuesday we had a two hour delay, but I went in at our normal time to finish last minute preparations for our first day of state testing.  As I sat at my desk, I heard the sound on my computer that signaled an email.  Then another and another.  As I looked at them, I thought they appeared rather suspicious.  (Undeliverable Viagra messages sent by me for Pete's sake!)  I immediately contacted our tech team, and sure enough my computer had been hacked.

It appeared that we caught it early, but a part of me still felt violated.  (I later read on my spam report that I had 1,165 spam messages - I average 30!)

I spent a good part of the day talking with our tech department and trying to fix problems that arose because of a simple password change.  Unfortunately, I was unable to do anything on my computer so I left it at school Tuesday night.

What was I going to do without it?

Although I still had my iPad, I really do not like using it to read blogs, make comments, or write posts.  I don't even know how to copy and paste on it.  How was I ever going to post Wednesday's slice on Two Writing Teachers?

Not having my computer made me feel as if a part of me was missing.  Am I that dependent on my computer?  Can I really not function without it?

I did survive, but I did not like it.

It is my understanding that they had to completely rebuild me as a user on my computer.  Luckily, they were able to save everything, and it is now back in my hands.

Tonight, as my fingers dance rhythmically across my keyboard writing and commenting on slices, I am smiling once again!  I feel whole.  I am connected!  My missing part is back and I am elated!

  1. Oh my. Such a nasty experience. I am glad that the technicians were able to help and your fingers can dance on the keyboard again.

  3. I have experienced a crash once, and I felt like you. During this month, I am spending a lot of time away from home, which means away from my wi-fi. It is tough!

  4. Isn't it funny how the computer has become such an essential tool? I could not imagine life without it - and yet....

  5. I hear you - I use the computer to blog and comment and I prefer it greatly over my phone or iPad for those purposes. I'm glad you are rejoined with your computer!

  6. Happily all is well and returned, this time. I know that feeling of being violated. It is not a pleasant feeling. It makes you not so brave to explore sites. I think commenting and posting on the ipad is hard too, but some like it.

  7. What did we do without all this technology? I don't understand why people want to hack into computers of innocent people who just want to do normal things. Such a hassle. Glad you are back up and running.

  8. I am the exact same way. Today, our teacher digital writing group was lamenting the fact that most of us forgot our laptops and had to rely on our iPads at tonight's class. It's amazing to me how reliant we've become on all of our technology. My kids ask me all the time, "What did you do before"...(fill in the blank with everything we can do today). I'm glad you were able to save everything on the computer.

  11. I couldn't help smiling when you said you felt like part of you was missing! I experienced that yesterday when I realized I had left my laptop at home. My first instinct was to call my husband and beg him to bring it to me. I refrained...but I felt helpless until I was reunited with my computer last night. I'm so happy you were reunited with your computer too!
